Born in 2003, Happy Zhu is a Chinese actress studying at UCLA
During her two recent years, she has acted her way from a background extra to many leading roles in several TV series. Her work ethic and passion are there to realize her dream of being an actress.
She was long exposed to acting through primary school performances. From class performance projects to new year school performances, she left no stone unturned to try auditions and try out new roles. She also directed classic novels like “The Legend of The Condor Heroes“. With all these so-called unprofessional attempts, she realized her passion in acting because it is only through stage performances where she manages to search her soul and find her freedom; She embodies a different character and finds out more about herself.
She then decided to take acting to a professional level. In her high school, she studied IGCSE Drama and IBDP Theater. She also attended summer school in Harvard and took Professor Adrianne Krstansky’s course on how to build a character. This time, she needed to overcome the language barrier in a bid to act in English. It was magical because acting in English felt different than in mandarin. The expressions allowed her to put her finger on various emotions and express them more vividly in acting.
She wasn’t satisfied though through just practicing in school and thus chose to explore the film industry. By searching casting information on Weibo and contacting hundreds of casting directors, she gradually built her resume and portfolio. Criticisms, despite being very daunting, never defeated her. Alone yet strong, she went to different hotel rooms for auditions and accumulated experience.
Now, she has taken 15+ main roles in award-attending films or film-school graduation projects with AFI, Beijing Film Academy, for example. She has also taken the female lead of Chinese TV series “Dear Mr. Right” and main roles in TV “A Song with You”, “Things About Casting” and “Little Actors: Chen Yu”. Her detailed portfolio is also attached on the website.
And that’s never it. Her exploration in acting continues in the US market.
